The Green Season

Most people avoid Bhutan in the monsoon. That’s exactly when to go. This is the classic circuit — experienced in its most alive state.
Day 1 — Paro
Arrive mid-monsoon. Mist over the valleys, green beyond any other season. Welcome dinner.
Early morning walk: mist over paddy fields, farmers at work. Rinpung Dzong in the rain — dramatic reflection in the moat. Indoor farmhouse visit: learn the active rice cultivation cycle. Local artisan workshop: woodcarving, weaving.

Drive through monsoon-lush forests. Visit Takin preserve. Weekend vegetable market — peak monsoon produce. Afternoon: traditional hot stone bath and Bhutanese herbal treatment.

GNH Commission visit (pre-arranged). Memorial Chorten prayer circuit in light rain. Traditional Bhutanese archery workshop. Evening: founder dinner with curated guest.

Dochula Pass: cloud breaks revealing Himalayan peaks between monsoon mist. Punakha Dzong: moat full, rivers swollen — the fortress at its most dramatic. Evening walk through rice paddies.

Chimi Lhakhang across green paddy fields — the approach changes completely in monsoon. White-water rafting on Pho Chhu river (peak season, most dramatic). Afternoon: fishing with a local guide.

Return over Dochula. Afternoon in Paro: Kyichu Lhakhang (7th century), interior lit by butter lamps. Sit quietly. Final dinner in the valley.

Last morning. Butter tea, the sound of the river. Drive to Paro airport. The ascent through monsoon cloud. Bhutan in the green season stays with you differently.
