Over Dochula Pass. Punakha Dzong at the river confluence — built 1637, one of the most beautiful structures in Bhutan.

Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten. Chimi Lhakhang. Farmhouse dinner with a local family. The valley at its most human.

South through Wangdue Phodrang. Up to Gangtey and the Phobjikha Valley, winter home of the black-necked crane. A flat, wide valley unlike anywhere else in Bhutan.

Gangtey Monastery: oldest Nyingmapa monastery in western Bhutan (17th century). Afternoon walk through the valley floor. No cars, no noise. Cranes in the fields in season.

East through the Black Mountains. Trongsa Dzong visible for miles — the fortress that controlled all movement between east and west Bhutan.

Royal Heritage Museum in Ta Dzong. Trongsa Dzong courtyards. Afternoon hike to a local lhakhang with valley views.

Bumthang: Bhutan’s spiritual heartland. Jambay Lhakhang (7th century). Kurjey Lhakhang, where Guru Rinpoche meditated and left an imprint in the rock face.

Jakar Dzong above the valley. Tamshing Monastery (15th century), finest Buddhist murals in Bhutan. Afternoon at leisure. Bumthang sets its own pace.

Long drive or short flight west. Final evening: Kyichu Lhakhang as the light goes. Butter lamps. Last dinner in the kingdom.

Paro airport. The runway between mountains. The ascent. Fifteen days. Every valley. The full picture.
